Though originally scheduled for Saturday, May 4th, heavy rains washed out Guntersville’s city wide cleanup. But that didn’t stop the effort to “Keep Guntersville Beautiful.”

Over 130 volunteers showed up during the rain makeup day the following Tuesday to help pick up litter around the city. Volunteers met at the City Harbor to get their gear that afternoon, and worked until 6 p.m. A light supper was provided by the city after the event.

The effort is part of the “Great American Clean Up.” Volunteers netted 144 bags of trash, 66 bags of recycled material and a box of electronic waste. In all, that is equal to 4,061 lbs. of trash using the Re-TRAC formula. Re-TRAC Connect is the leading waste reduction measurement system for government and organizations.

City Recycling Coordinator Nicole Reyes was pleased with the effort given by the community during the event. This year’s cleanup surpassed last year in both the number of volunteers and amount of trash collected, she said.
